There is no doubt that spending a bit more money on a pair of heavy weight denim jeans will go along way, and your work jeans will last that bit longer than the cheaper, thinner alternatives. However, this doesn't mean that all cheaper work jeans are poor quality; not at all.

Whilst we are a big fan of the classic blue wash jean for hard grafting, we are also mindful that Dickies make some great work pants, and these can start at around $20. Obviously they may not be the best fitting, most comfortable pair of pants, but they are proven to be reliably hard wearing.

Diesel Work Jeans

We aren't certain that diesel actually want to be associated with jeans for hard working folk who make a living with their hands (not talking hand models here), but we have found them to be some of the best wearing jeans in the world (yes, even better than Levi's!). They are an Italian company by origination, but they have a huge international presence these days. Comparatively, they are quite a recent manufacturer, but have probably been around for a good twenty years now.

Given their Italian heritage, you are right in assuming they are more concerned with design and fashion than they are with the manufacturing a trusty pair of jeans that will see you through years of hard graft.

Despite this, the fact remains that some of their jeans (if you manage to track down the more traditional cuts (without the drainpipe legs and rips) contain very high counts of denim twill, making them more durable than most (even more hard wearing that some of the stuff you find at surplus and outdoor stores.

Whilst we understand here that you need to pay a bit more dollar for a reliable pair of hard wearing work jeans, we don't necessarily advocate the $150 you can end up paying for a pair of Diesel jeans. You also run the risk of getting joshed by your coworkers if you are sporting designer Italian jeans to a site.

What Makes Work Jeans Different

Jeans were traditionally made of a lighter cotton than denim, but jeans have now become synonymous with hard wearing denim. By definition, denim is a rugged, durable cotton twill.

It's hard to pin down exactly when the relationship between denim and jeans (the trousers) took over from other cottons, but America (largely thought to be the home of the jean, even though it was France) has been making denim jeans for almost two-hundred years. There can be little doubt that the original denim jeans of this period were designed as hard wearing trousers to be worn when working the land, in construction or other occupations that involved a lot of hands-on, good honest work.

Now, when we think about the work jeans we need in this day and age, we would love to have a pair of these original pairs of hard-wearing denim jeans designed for just that, and not some fashion item that is more concerned with how it looks than being rugged and long lasting.

Unfortunately what was the defacto for jeans has become more a small niche that you have to track down. Ninety-percent of jeans in the world are most unsuitable to be used for work jeans, as they are based on thinner, less durable cottons - either designed for fashion or for low price. The fact is well built, heavy denim jeans are going to be expensive, because denim is not a cheap commodity.

Many people think that for pants to be classed as work jeans, they need to have a ton of pockets and slings for putting tools in; not true. A good pair of work jeans is just trousers; the more similar to regular pants they are the better. A man (or woman) will choose how they want to use their jeans by wearing a tool belt, harness or whatever they need to get the job done.

If you don't spend any more time on this site, take away just one message - if you want jeans to last, get as high percentage of denim in them as possible; do not be fooled into getting the cotton imitations.

We don't want this to turn into an advertising campaign for Dickies (we don't have anything to do with them), but they are one of the leading providers of high quality, long lasting and practical work jeans in the world. Not only do they churn out "quality workwear since 1922", but they don't try and take you for a ride on the price, either.

Dickies are an American founded company, but they operate and sell their wares all around the world. However, they tend to be a lot cheaper when bought in the US, or you can buy Dickies work jeans online.

Obviously we want to keep this site on track with the theme of denim work wear, but it is worth remembering that Dickies also manufacture a lot of pretty hard wearing work pants that are not denim. There are many advancements in modern fabric that have produced material that is hard wearing but more flexible than denim, however we have yet to find any that are quite as reliable as the trusty heavy denim.

Why Work Jeans are so Important

Jeans are one of those things that are universal; no matter where you are in the world, you are guaranteed to find people drinking Coca-Cola and people wearing jeans (and sometimes both at the same time). There must be tens of billions of pairs of jeans in the world, but it may not surprise you to hear that the modern day jean and the original denim jeans have grown further apart on recent years.

Partly due to demand and the need for cheaper jeans, many manufacturers in the world make jeans with very little, or even no, denim in them at all. It is denim that gives jeans their hard wearing rough and tough feel, and makes them last so long.
